LDR Research

A major piece of research on communication for ldr’s has been done by Simon King whilst at Carnegie Mellon university.
The poster is a very nice summary of the research project and whats interesting for me is that although it goes into more detail (it was a 6 month+ project) it lays out a lot of the work I have been doing in researching phatic communication by laying them all out in one place. The big problem we have during brainstorming is that so much interesting work has been done in this field before. However his chart splitting all of the projects focusing on phatic communication plus existing communication methods into categories such as explicit and implicit, plus synchronous and asynchronous is very interesting. It shows that the vast majority of work has been focusing on the synchronous and explicit and little has been done focusing on the asynchronous and implicit.

The other key takeaway from his research that supports my own is that what people miss in ldr’s is the everyday or routine things. It is essential that we focus on must seamlessly integrate with the daily routine and highlight aspect of this that is usually shared that is missing when couples are separated.
